We have seen an increase in tickets and cases regarding various products no longer sending/polling emails due to the changes with Basic Authentication…but why?
In September 2019, Microsoft announced it would disable Basic Authentication in Exchange Online, with protocols including Exchange ActiveSync (EAS), POP, IMAP and Remote PowerShell inline to be turned off. The change, targeting the cloud-based Office 365/Exchange Online products, means Modern Authentication (OAuth 2.0 token based auth) must be used going forward to connect to servers, services and endpoints. Starting October 1st 2022, Microsoft began to randomly select cloud tenants and disable Basic Authentication for in-scope protocols, HOWEVER, they also issued a lifeline to customers simply not ready for the change, by extending the deadline; the full disablement of Basic Authentication is now the first week of 2023.
So, you’ve automatically got extra time to consider your/your customers’ future proofing options, right? WRONG, to allow yourself the extra time, you must temporarily re-enable basic authentication in your Microsoft 365 admin center – Instructions on how to do this can be found here. (If you do not apply this change, you may see services failing over the coming weeks if you are still using Basic Authentication with affected protocols. Affected service examples include, but are not limited to, Email polling for auto invoicing, guest printing using email, storing scanned jobs to sharepoint/onedrive, scan to mail etc.)
Please Note: This re-enablement must be done for each protocol you require. You can only action the reablement once, so if you turn off Basic Authentication for a specific protocol again, you will no longer be able to reenable it. The enablement can take up to one hour to take effect.
